About Us

The Regency Chess Company was formed in 2008 by Julian Deverell and is based in Frome, United Kingdom. Julian decided to set up a specialist chess retailer that supplies only the finest products and present them on the internet in a form that customers can easily understand and compare. By combining skills in design, photography and product sourcing the Regency Chess company has created a clear and concise online shopping experience that allows the customer to choose a quality chess product online with ease and confidence.

Julian spent much of 2007 traveling to Europe and Asia to seek out and establish relations with high quality chess manufacturers. By visiting each chess workshop in person, he has ensured that only high quality, well made products are sold on the Regency Chess web site. In this way, each supplier is vetted to ensure that they are operating in a clean, honest and fair way without exploitation of their craftspeople.

The strong aesthetic sense we possess is reflected in both the web site design and the selection of products. The company has chosen each chess set for its beauty and fine craftsmanship.

Mission statement

  • To provide a wide range of stunning, high quality chess products at a reasonable price that reflects the materials and craftsmanship used to make them.
  • To present all of our products in a clear concise way to make it easy for you to compare, select and decide on the product you want.
  • To offer excellent standards of customer service, delivery and follow up to all of our customers irrespective of the size or price of their purchase.
  • To ensure that our high standards of ethics and fairness are always met when dealing with both our customers and suppliers.

Julian Deverell - Owner

Julian Deverell

Julian set up The Regency Chess Company back in 2008 from a bedroom in his parents' house. He had already been trading traditional games online but decided that a dedicated chess specialist was the way forward. A fateful meeting in London with Rishi Sharma, a producer of extremely fine chessmen, inspired Julian to set up the Regency Chess branding, website and product range. Julian still remains passionate about the business, his team and the products we sell. He lives in Bath with his lovely wife Hannah and their little family of naughty four legged creatures. He enjoys yoga, guitar playing, going to rock gigs and was formerly a fully licensed skydiver with over 500 jumps to his name.
