Chess Pieces, Board and Box

Above you'll find our extensive range of traditional chess sets, which include boards, pieces and sometimes boxes. The chess sets in this category have been hand picked because of their style, quality and their traditional appearance. All of our traditional chess sets are created using the classic chess set design known as ‘Staunton’ – and this has become known as the standard or ‘normal’ style of chess set. Using quality woods like rosewood, wenge, ebony and walnut craftsmen create our classic chess sets in some of the worlds most experienced and established workshops.

What is a classic or standard chess set?

The design that is now most commonly thought of as the classic or standard chess set emerged in the 1800’s and was quickly adopted by both players and chess makers alike. To this day this style is still the most common style in regular production and is the most traditional design.

As a game, chess has a history that can be traced back almost 1500 years. Throughout this time the style and appearance of chess pieces and boards has evolved and changed through generations. From the Lewis chessmen that are believed to date from the 12th Century through to designs that have emerged in more recent years. It was during the 1800’s the design that we now most commonly associate with chess was born. This traditional design now known as the ‘Staunton’ style was the brainchild of Howard Staunton, a famous player and the organiser of the first international chess tournament.

Inspired by Howard Staunton

Howard wanted a standard style that would be used in all chess tournaments and worked with a chess maker to develop and produce the first Staunton chess set, which went on to become the most traditional design.

The Regency Chess Company sells a huge range of wooden chess sets, the vast majority of which are classic designs. We have found that many of our customers don’t know the industry terms such as ‘Staunton’ or exactly what it refers to. It actually refers to the most iconic and archetypal chess set design in the world, horses for knights, castles for rooks, all the classic elements that we now take for granted. Here at the Regency Chess Company we have the largest selection of classic chess sets in Europe.

Vintage Chess Set

Today there is a huge trend for vintage and reclaimed items and vintage chess sets are some of them. The genuine Staunton chess sets from the mid 1800s and beyond have become extremely collectible, but there are also many other types of vintage chess set that people are seeking out. We only sell brand new sets, but many of these are reproductions of original designs, some pre and some post Staunton. For example, the St George chess set was a popular design that was heavily in use pre Staunton. We also have the classic Staunton reproductions like the Old English Elite pieces that encapsulate the very essence of vintage Staunton design.
