Downhead 3" Ebonised Chessmen with 15" Solid Rosewood Board

A superb chess set that encompasses a compact size with fine craftsmanship and a very luxurious lacquered chess board. The chess pieces are classic Staunton, weighted and felted. A basic design crafted to exacting standards from fine polished hardwood. The white pieces are made from clean grained boxwood and the dark ones are 'ebonised' which gives a very convincing ebony look at a fraction of the cost of real ebony chessmen. The ebonising process involves a black chemical dye substance that soaks deep into the wood allowing it to be polished as if it were real ebony.  

By far the best aspect of this set is the solid rosewood and maple chess board. The whole frame of the board has been crafted from solid rosewood and each square is a thick piece of either rosewood or maple. The board is lacquered to a medium gloss and the effect is stunning. A very high quality board that has been crafted from a very luxury hardwood. The result of using genuine solid rosewood for the board means the grains are rich and varied and highly attractive. It's the perfect backdrop to the superbly made downhead chessmen that adorn it.
