Although chess originates in the East, perhaps the most well-known historical chess set is the Isle Of Lewis Chessmen. These whalebone pieces originated in medieval Norway and were discovered in Scotland in the early 19th century. There are however many different medieval chess pieces on display in museums all around the world.
