Great product quality, delivered on time.

Google ReviewTim VincentReviewed 05/10/2023

I needed to make a speedy order, so I contacted The Regency Chess Company and they made sure they looked out for my name/order and got it sent off that same afternoon. When they noted an item I had ordered was out of stock they upgraded me to ensure we got the order in time. Super great service and so helpful they were on WhatsApp too - just really lovely to deal with. Thank you so much again!

Second time I've used this company and would be my first choice again. The small set I bought for training was high quality, with perfectly weighted pieces. Delivery was prompt and the set was well packaged.

The name Harrwitz is in memory of Daniel Harrwitz who was born in Germany in 1821. An established chess player during his time, he was also renowned for participating in blindfold games. He competed against the likes of Howard Staunton, Adolf Anderssen and Paul Morphy during his time. He withdrew during his game with Morphy with a claim of ill health and subsequently retired. In 1884, he passed away at just 62 years of age.

Unique yet still very traditional are the Harrwitz Black and Antiqued Chess Men. Each chess piece is painstakingly turned then expertly carved from high quality boxwood to create this exceptional set of luxury pieces.

To create the darker pieces, the boxwood is put through an ebonising process that seeps deep into the hardwood, in contrast, the light pieces have been antiqued. Both processes give the colours a very professional finish, whilst also further protecting the wood. This exceptional set of chess men will last for many years.

These reproduction pieces also bear the original markings of the kings crown on 1 black knight, 1 black rook, 1 white knight and 1 white rook and these pieces will sit on the Kings flank. This was a practical innovation to identify their position on the King’s side of the board. This is because, in descriptive chess notation, the rooks and knights were often referred to as being the ‘queens knight, or the ‘king’s rook’.

The 3.5 inches (89 mm) King, along with all the other pieces, is weighted and have a base layer of felt to ensure your board is protected. Because of their size, we have selected the 19.7 inch Black Anegre and Maple board. This stunning board has been crafted by the renowned Rechapados Ferrer board makers based in Spain. The precision workmanship along with the quality veneers and high gloss finish make this a beautiful playing field and reflect the chess pieces perfectly.

The chess board in this set has been expertly crafted by Rechapados Ferrer in Spain using precision laser cutting techniques and stunning wooden veneers combined with expert lacquering and finishing. The underside of the board is finished in a satin veneer that is a different colour from the playing surface of the board. The veneers used for the underside may vary in colour from batch to batch.
