THE STORY BEHIND MANOPOULOS
As a project of his studies, the company’s very first set was created by Konstantinos Manopoulos. He had a great love for this art and the cultural values of European history which led him to the idea and later the foundation of the company in 1970. As an excellent backgammon player, his father had created a unique backgammon set combining wood and aluminum. Konstantinos was inspired by his father’s ideas and shared his interest for handcrafted art. The company, based in Athens Greece, continues to offer high quality with imaginative combinations and design for gamers and collectors.
Marquetry is an art that flourishes in Europe since the 16th century. Techniques of wood marquetry were developed in Antwerp and other Flemish centers of luxury cabinet-making during the early part of this century. The craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form artistic and decorative patterns, designs or pictures is a technique that may be applied to a variety of objects. These range from case furniture or even seat furniture, to decorative smaller items with smooth, veneerable surfaces or to freestanding pictorial panels appreciated in their own right.
THE BACKGAMMON COLLECTION
Manufactured with the finest woods, such as olive, walnut, mahogany, oak, rosewood and ebony, the Manopoulos Backgammon collection is both handmade and hand finished. The decorative material is inserted below the wood mass with the traditional technique of marquetry.
THE STORY BEHIND BACKGAMMON
Having been around for over 5000 years, Backgammon is one of the oldest board games known. It is a game is for two players where counters are moved according to the roll of dice. To win, the player has to remove all of their pieces from the board before their opponent. Backgammon is a member of the ‘tables’ family which is also one of the oldest classes of board games in the world.
Involving a combination of both strategy and luck (from rolling dice). The dice may well determine the outcome of a single game but over a series of many games, the better player will accrue the better record, a bit like poker.
As a result, these match records are good indicators of relative skill. With each roll of the dice, players must select from numerous options for moving their checkers and also anticipate possible counter-moves by the opponent. Whilst there is an established repertoire of common tactics and occurrences, inevitably variants have been introduced over the years. In one such variant, that originated from early 20th century New York, players may raise the stakes during the game.
