Travel Chess Sets
Travel chess sets come in a huge variety of styles and sizes. Technically a travel chess set should be smaller in size than ten inches. There are however plenty of sizes larger and smaller. The term travel chess set essentially refers to the self contained style of set where the chessmen are stored neatly inside the case which either opens or unfolds to become a chess board.
Magnetic Chess Sets
Plenty of travel chess sets are also magnetic. This means that the chessmen contain small magnets in their bases and underneath the chess board is a sheet of metal. The result is that the chessmen will stick lightly to the chess board during play. This is great for really small sets where the pieces are too light to remain planted on the chess board through weight alone. It's also highly useful if you are trying to play chess in the car or on a train where the odd bit of movement might cause upset.
